Writing Assignment 1

Today we discussed mental grammar and that linguists are more focused on describing how people use language rather than creating prescriptive rules. We mentioned a few examples from popular media that show that people often violate prescriptive rules in actual speech. Think back on your education, particularly in writing. What prescriptive rules do you find yourself or others violating most frequently in conversation? Do you think that you ever follow prescriptive rules in speech? If so, when and where? Do you follow these rules in writing? Based on what you have learned, discuss the role of prescriptivism in education and its benefits or drawbacks.
