Writing Assignment 5

Yoda is a character from Star Wars that is famed for his bizarre syntax. Some examples of his speech is provided below:

  • Careful timing we all need.
  • Stay and help you I will
  • So certain are you.
  • When 900 years old you reach, look as good you will not
  • Unexpected this is.

Based on your knowledge of English sentence structure and movement, how would you describe his syntactic structures? What constituents does he move and where does he move them to (don’t just say “to the beginning” or “to the end”  — what specific structural position does he move them to?

You all have also studied at least one foreign language. Try to think about how the sentence structure of those languages are similar to/different from English syntactically.
